TLDR: Autonomous AI agents are already crawling websites and will soon compare and transact on behalf of customers, which means machine-readable facts, structured data and clean APIs now decide whether a brand gets represented or skipped.
The website now has a reader without eyes
For thirty years websites served one audience: people. That assumption is ending. Autonomous AI (artificial intelligence) agents now read, compare and increasingly act on web content. The Semrush AI Search Bootcamp makes the point in its session “Customer Playbook: Is your website ready for AI agents?”, noting that agents are already crawling content and will soon transact on behalf of customers and brands. For a lean team, an agent-readable site is a distribution advantage while larger competitors still build for eyes alone.
Legibility decides who gets represented
An agent needs what a human does not: explicit facts, not implied ones. Machine-readability, structured data that labels prices and availability, clear product and pricing details, clean application programming interfaces (APIs) and unambiguous content together determine whether an agent can represent a brand or skips it. Search engine optimisation (SEO) made pages findable by people; the new task is making them parsable by machines.
What to do now
Founders should state core facts — what the product does, who it serves, what it costs — in plain consistent language across the site, and treat clean APIs as a transaction channel agents can use directly. Implement structured data on products and pricing, remove ambiguity from copy, and audit how the brand reads in AI Search against competitors. The payoff is being the brand an agent can actually act on.
